Web site caught in time warp

Monticello — Is it a Web page or a cybertime capsule?

The official Monticello Web page has been posting a big, blown-up photo and message from former Mayor Gary Sommers, as well as the names of the former treasurer and two former trustees, none of whom have served on the board since spring.

Minorities missing from Monticello bicentennial journal

Monticello's new bicentennial journal is well-produced and written, but disappointing. While historian John Conway deserves credit for his original narratives, village officials with final say over the book's overall content have reduced it to a promotion for local good ol' boys. We could have seen more (even anything) on the role of people of color in building Monticello, 1804 to present. Apart from paid ads, the only black face in the book is that of Chubby Checker, who once visited.

By beard alone

Male secondary sex characteristics, including development of facial hair on the chin, cheeks, and upper lip, appear during mid adolescence. It's common for boys in their mid teens to begin shaving, and some either stop shaving and allow a full crop of facial hair or trim their thickening whiskers in keeping with various styles. Others prefer their face to be naked to the elements.

In today's western societies, and also in the east, men's beards range from wild and unkempt facial shrubs to neatly trimmed goatees.
