The Bud Rue Memorial Walk for Social Justice

On the third Sunday of each October, members of the Upper Delaware Unitarian Universalist Fellowship organize The Bud Rue Walk for Social Justice to raise funds for organizations whose work helps to support social justice in the area. This year's walk will be held on October 19 and will step off at 12:00 p.m. noon. Funds will be raised for Victims Intervention Program in Wayne County, Rape Intervention Education Services in Sullivan County, Wayne County Habitat for Humanity and Sullivan County Habitat for Humanity.

The walk is an easy five-mile stroll along back roads in Beach Lake, PA beginning and ending at the Berlin Community Center. A sweep car continually drives the route. Walkers can choose to leave the walk at any point. An abundant potluck meal is provided following the walk at the Community Center, beginning around 2:00 p.m.

If you can't make the walk yourself, you can make a generous donation by mail to the address shown at the bottom of this page. All funds collected are distributed to the designated organizations the following spring.

How did this event get started? Bud Rue was a charter member of the Upper Delaware Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. Back in 1993, he asserted that, while he thoroughly enjoyed talks and discussions, he felt strongly that the group should be "out there doing something" to help less fortunate people. So after helping to organize the Wayne County chapter of Habitat for Humanity, he persuaded the Fellowship to sponsor a fundraiser with proceeds to be donated to local charities.

Who was Bud Rue?

Bud himself was unable to complete that first Walk. Each year since then, consistent with our statement of purpose, the Fellowship has sponsored the Bud Rue Memorial Walk for Social Justice to help our neighbors. During the first walk, Bud fell victim to a cardiopulmonary arrest, brought on by an asthma attack, and he died. The Fellowship has carried the event forward annually, named in Bud's memory, benefiting the same original charities.
