Bud Rue memorial walk for social justice takes a new turn
- BEACH LAKE - Walkers in this year's Bud Rue Memorial Walk for Social
Justice will tread a new path in the October 18th event, which starts at
1:00 PM. The walk will begin at the fellowship's new meeting place, the
Beach Lake Community Center.
- This will be the sixth such walkathon held by the fellowship. Past events
have brought in more than $15,000 for local environmental, housing, and
human rights groups, mostly made in small contributions by individual donors.
- The precise route of the walk will be announced the morning of the event.
In past years, the 10k walk went from Narrowsburg to Milanville. This year,
walkers will begin and end at the community center.
- A retired math teacher and community organizer, married to the same woman
for 37 years, and the father of four children, in the summer of 1993 Bud
Rue proposed to the UU fellowship that the small congregation do something
to serve the upper Delaware River valley community, in addition to meeting
for worship services as the group had then been doing for six years. It was
agreed the fellowship would sponsor a fund-raiser to benefit causes which
were consistent with the fellowship's statement of purpose.
- The first annual walk for social justice was October 24, 1993.
- The chief organizer of the first walk," Rue fell victim during the 1993
walk to a cardiopulmonary arrest, brought on by an asthma attack. At the
initiative of the fellowship and Rue's family, the event has since been
held annually, named in his memory, benefiting the same original groups
plus a few more.
- Local people, businesses and organizations, friends and family of
fellowship members, and others who want to contribute, have given
generously each year.
- Groups which have benefited from past walks are the Delaware Highlands
Conservancy, Habitat for Humanity of Wayne and Sullivan counties,
Interfaith Outreach United, the Unitarian Universalist United Nations
Office, and Victims Intervention Program.
- All proceeds collected for the walk benefit the charitable organizations
named, with no administrative costs or salaries taken. Contributions are
tax-deductible under Section 170(c)(2) of the Internal Revenue Code.
- The fellowship, which has met regularly since 1987, worships in the Beach
Lake Community Center, Sunday mornings at 11:00, and is affiliated with the
Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations.
