Rain holds back for Bud Rue walk-a-thon
- NARROWSBURG, NY and MILANVILLE, PA -- Despite heavy rainstorms the day and night before, including floods and down tree limbs around the area, the weather in the Upper Delaware River Valley during the 4th Bud Rue Memorial Walkathon couldn't have been better on Sunday, October 20. The sun shone brightly on the 35 walkers until about 20 minutes after the last walker arrived at the destination in Milanville, PA after the 10k walk down River Rd., at which time rains resumed.
- Rain in nearby Monticello reportedly continued all day. At least one regular past Walkathon participant, Dr. Robert Rue of Niantic, CT, a brother of the man for whom the walk is named, was unable to attend this year, after being turned back by state police the night before, due the heavy rainstorms and poor road conditions.
- Members of the boards of directors of the four local groups benefitting from the walk described the activities of their groups, including: May Rutherford of Habitat for Humanity of Wayne County, Honesdale; Jesse Ballew of Interfaith Outreach United, Callicoon; Karen Gravell of the Victims' Intervention Program, Honesdale; and B.J. O'Brien of the Delaware-Highlands Conservancy, Milavnile. The Unitarian Universalist United Nations Office will also get a share. The group assembled in a Narrowsburg parking lot to begin the walk.
- While it is presently unknown how much will be collected through pledges made to the 1996 walkers, the past record is as follows:
- 1993 - $3,200 was raised, with $800 to each of 4 charities;
- 1994 - $4,000 was raised, with $1,000 to each of 4 charities;
- 1995 - $4,750 was raised, with $950 to each of 5 charities.
- Anyone still wishing to contribute may do so by sending a tax-deductible check to the Upper Delaware Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, PO Box 123, Milanville, PA 18443-0123.
