'Social justice' groups get
walk-a-thon checks

By TOM RUE

REGION - For the 7th year, representatives of local charities met on May 7 with members of the Upper Delaware Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Beach Lake, Pa. to receive proceeds of the Bud Rue Memorial Walk for Social Justice - held each October.

The event is named for an organizer of the congregation's annual fund-raiser who died on the first walk in 1993. The purpose of the annual event, which has been named in Rue's memory since 1994, is to raise funds for groups which share the fellowship's humanist values.

Representing Habitat for Humanity (HFH) of Sullivan County were Steve McBrien and past president Lois Burrill, who said the chapter is preparing to build its first home on Lawrence Ave. in Monticello.

The mission of HFH is to build decent, affordable housing in partnership with those in need. HFH is a Christian ministry but works with people of all faiths in accomplishing its work.

HFH of Wayne County - which Bud Rue helped found -- will also receive a check, according to Laurie Stuart, who led the morning program.

Barbara Yeaman of the Delaware-Highlands Conservancy accepted a donation to the land trust, which helps to ensure conservation of the watershed by placing voluntary easements on property which it acquires.

Jessie Ballew accepted a check for Interfaith Outreach United, which operates a Callicoon thrift shop and provides other social services to residents of the Upper Delaware River valley who are in economic need.

Victim's Intervention Program (VIP), which provides safe housing and advocacy to victims of domestic violence in Wayne County, will also get a check.

In addition to the five local groups named above, a donation will be sent to the Unitarian Universalist United Nations Office to aid that body's humanitarian agenda.

Each of the beneficiaries of the 1999 walk-a-thon received $262, according to fellowship treasurer Gerry Eno. Since the fall, $1572 in pledges has been collected, Eno reported. In the seven walks have been held, nearly $20,000 has been generated for the same charities each year. With zero administrative costs, 100% of donations received are divided equally among the beneficiary organizations.

The Upper Delaware Unitarian Universalist Fellowship was founded in 1987 and meets Sundays at 11:00 AM in the Beach Lake Community Center.
