Delaware Community Center
forms committees
- CALLICOON - Four special committees were appointed at the March 23rd meeting of the Delaware Community Center board of directors. Each committee will meet prior to the full board's next session on April 26.
- A planning committee will consider new ideas for community programs and activities at the center. Public input prior to April 19 would be appreciated. The group consists of Roe Bedford 914/887-xxxx, Clarence Kratz 914/887-xxxx and Tom Rue 717/729-xxxx. They will be assisted by Jean Heuschen of Callicoon.
- Publication of a history of the community center, written by Town of Delaware historian Mary Curtis, will be coordinated by a committee consisting of Rue, Joyce Sykes, and Pete Sigelakis, assisted by Curtis and Tom Hubers. Display and other advertising will be offered to local business and individuals to cover costs of the booklet and benefit the center.
- A benefit golf tournament will be hosted by the Villa Roma resort sometime this summer. Bedford and Barry Schuchman will meet with resort representative Steve Luty and golf pro Matt Kleiner on April 22 to plan the event. Other benefits and activities are also planned.
- A committee to review existing by-laws will consist of Rue, Schuchman and Bedford. Amendment of the center's certificate of incorporation to allow an increase in board size will also be considered.
- Board members reviewed and approved the draft of a newsletter to be mailed to area residents shortly.
- In another matter, the board discussed rent negotiations with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) on the Upper Delaware River access owned by the center and leased to the state.
- The DEC recently offered $15,000 for a 20-year lease of the site. Since 1964, the DEC has operated the access virtually rent-free.
- After considerable discussion, the board voted to offer a slightly enlarged parcel for the same amount on a 15-year term. They declined a DEC offer of $2000 for a perpetual fishing easement along Callicoon Creek, between Creamery Road and the river. The proposed enlarged rental parcel would include the area in which the state sought the easement.
- IN other business, the board: discussed progress in locating a new insurance carrier to pick up the public liability policy which expires next month; planned a clean-up for May 21; reviewed the calendar of coming events; and heard a report by caretaker Sue Hennig, recently returned form Florida.

- Under the direction of caretakers Bill and sue Hennig, tasks will include: cleaning the pool, pool-house and pump house, sandblasting the baby pool; repairing and painting benches and fences; repair to the grandstands; trimming shrubs and trees, raking, weed-trimming, and more.
- Workers should bring as many of the following as they are able: brooms, shovels, rakes, weed-eater, trimmers, paint-brushes, hammers, saws and other implements.
- After the work, volunteers will dine on a hearty cuisine of hamburgers, hot dogs, soft drinks, and any other edible contributions which may turn up. The center is located on Creamery Road at the downriver end of Main Street in Callicoon.
