El niño es Cubano

cigar bar

Elian Gonzalez A child of Fidel?
A son of Cuba.
Born of water or of earth?
His mother breathed the sea, but he the air.
Was she compelled by abuse, or longing for freedom?
Grandmothers blow kisses in a New York church...

hoping to bring him home.
El niño es Cubano. "He is our grandson," they cry.
But they fly south with no embrace.
"The best interest of the child", lawyers propose.
Who knows? Floridians or federal police? Some judge.
A difficult case. All deserve freedom. Yet who on earth is truly free?
Is all of Cuba is captive to one old man?
Mom is dead, but Dad still there. Waiting.
Too much pride, machismo, respect, to come groveling. Leave that to women.
Will the boy grow to manhood with no parents; only second cousins by politics?
