Several times in recent years, consideration has been given to dissolving the Village of Monticello and merging it into the Town of Thompson (Sullivan County, New York), or eliminating or consolidating certain municipal services.
Though some steps have been taken, with varying success, each time the idea of complete dissolution examined, the idea has been abandoned because it was found to be not in the best interest of Village taxpayers. That does not mean it will never be in the Village's interest to dissolve at some time in the future, as society and economic circumstances continue to evolve; or that more municipal services may not be shared. The intent of this page is not to advocate a position on Village dissolution, but to collect links and archive public documents as a public service, to aid in continuing study and discussion of what some find to be a surprisingly complex question.
