Dear Judges:

I write concerning the recent abolition of the office of Village Justice of the Village of Greenport, as authorized by the Legislature at the last session (L. 1996, c. 164) and as effectuated by the voters of Greenport by referendum on August 8, 1998.

The enabling statute provids no direction as to disposition of the cases pending before the Greenport Village Court as of August 8th. Accordingly, it is our position that these cases now must be considered as pending in the Southold Town Court. Absent a judicial ruling otherwise, I expect that you will handle these cases in the ordinary course of your business.
