The River Reporter Bert Feldman memorial redux By TOM RUE MONGAUP VALLEY - Anyone who may have missed the first can attend a memorial get-together for Bert Feldman, this Sunday, June 13, from 2 to 5 PM, according to his surviving widow, Anne B. Feldman."A meeting in memory of Bert S. Feldman," advertised in several area papers, will be held in the Feldman living room at 533 Creamery Rd., Mongaup Valley, Anne Feldman said. She noted that the family decided to hold the second service because so many people said they didn't hear about the first one. "We're hearing from so many people, 'Oh, if we'd only known!'" she said. Bert Feldman, senior editor of The River Reporter, died February 2nd. A packed funeral was held February 7, at Agusda Achim in Livingston Manor. He was 76. "People have been so kind and so nice," said Anne Feldman. She added that her late husband was the subject of a state legislative resolution which will be read at the meeting. One point not mentioned in the resolution, she said, was Bert's 1980 arrest for Disorderly Conduct for tape-recording a Bethel town board meeting. The arrest resulted in a landmark suit in which the NYS Court of Appeals ruled that public officials can be held accountable for "private" statements, with a judgment of $30,000 and compensatory and punitive damages to Feldman, Anne said. With his share of the proceeds the Feldmans toured Denmark, twice. Survivors include Anne B. Feldman, daughters Sandy Feldman and Wendy Brinn; and Wendy's children, Adam and Jessica. Anne Feldman said she is beginning to get the annual round of calls from reporters wanting to interview the noted local historian about the Woodstock concert. One reporter asked to interview Anne instead. "The person I am not is Bert," she replied. |
