The Red Cross Holocaust Tracing Center was created in 1990, when Soviet documents were released listing more than 400,000 Holocaust victims. Since then, the Red Cross has confirmed 535 deaths and more than 1300 deportations, and provided 22 certificates of internment.
The center has handled more than 17,500 inquiries from individuals seeking information about family and friends. There have been 277 "miracles" -- people who have been found alive, often more than 50 years of separation from loved ones, according to Sullivan County Red Cross director Karen Cooke in Monticello.
Tracing efforts are often undertaken by volunteers who are themselves Holocaust victims, she added.
To initiate a search for a loved one lost during the Holocaust or World War II, call the Sullivan County chapter of American Red Cross at 914/794-5620 in Monticello; or 717/253-2310 for the Wayne/Pike chapter in Honesdale.
