Village of Monticello Board of Trustees
Resolution concerning Oneida Nation gaming application
- WHEREAS, the economies of the Village of Monticello and the County of Sullivan require and would be greatly enhanced by the development of new and diverse business activities; and
- WHEREAS, the historical basis of economic vitality of this community has been the resort industry; and
- WHEREAS, other relatively nearby communities have, through the adoption of legalized casino gambling; and, [sic]
- WHEREAS, members of this community welcome the prospects of casino gaming, in addition to other economic development, recognizing the industry will cause an immediate infusion of substantial capital to the region, thereafter attract
visitors to the region who will frequent other area businesses in addition to casino gaming, and create and maintain a significant number of new jobs in the gaming and service industries which will be necessary to augment and support casing
gambling; and
- WHEREAS, the Oneida Indian Nation has the authority under Section 20 of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) (25 U.S.C. 2719) subject to the approval of the United States Secretary of the Interior and the Governor of the State of
New York, to take land into trust and to construct and operate gaming casino; and,
- WHEREAS, the Secretary of the Interior has the authority to make the final decision with respect to this proposal, with the concurrence of the Governor of the State of New York.
- NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, the Board of Trustees of the Village of Monticello:
- Supports the concept that the Oneida Indian Nation construct and maintain casino gaming on lands located within the Village of Monticello;
- Encourages establishment of a dialogue with the Oneida Indian Nation and effected governments, including the Village of Monticello, with the intent of the achievement of an agreement toward that goal; and,
- Urges the prompt and favorable consideration of the request of the Oneida Indian Nation by the Secretary of the Interior and Governor of the State of New York once that agreement, which includes the approval of the Village of
Monticello, is achieved.
