Monticello settles with phone company By TOM RUE
MONTICELLO - Settlement of a suit filed by New York Telephone Co., protesting the utility's 1993/94 tax assessment in the Village of Monticello, was authorized by vote of the village board on February 22. The matter was discussed previously in executive session, as a matter of pending litigation. Assessments of two lots also included the vlaue of wires and poles, village attorney Martin Miller said. The settlement with village trustees reduced the amount downward by nearly $210,000, to $3,850,000, he added. Stating the settlement saved tax dollars, Miller said the case "would be an impossible litigation." He said the reduced amount was "patterned after" assessments in the Town of Thompson. The stipulation was submitted for signature by NYS Supreme Court justice Joseph Torraca in Kingston.
