NPS signs vandalized
By TOM RUE
- BARRYVILLE -- Numerous National Park Service (NPS) directional and other signs were sprayed with silver or red paint, and temporary parking signs were knocked down, between the hours of I 1:00 p.m. on 3une 12 and 7:00 a.m. on the 13th, according to NPS chief ranger Glenn Voss.
- The incidents immediately preceded re-opening ceremonies at the Roebling Bridge, which is owned by the NPS. Assistant district ranger Robin Daniels said that the damaged signs included several which were brand new, as well as others in Barryville, Shohola, Damascus and Narrowsburg. She placed the cost of replacement and/or cleaning in excess of $500, although the exact estimates had not yet been calculated.
- The cost does not include 18 hours of overtime paid to the four extra rangers who were called out to help patrol the bridge area after the initial discovery of vandalism on the night of 3une 12. "I don't know how much further they're going to press it or if they're going to say we kind of expected something like this to happen," Daniels said.
- In another matter, Daniels noted that the New York State Police may issue citations against two individuals who erected a banner reading "NIPS Get Out" on Route 97 at the eastern end of the Roebling Bridge. A New York law bans the placement of signs on the right-of-way of a public highway, she said.
- Contacted Monday evening, trooper 3oseph Barrett conirmed that he was investigating the incident, adding that he was researching whether any laws had been violated.
