Community Center seeks
moral and financial support
By TOM RUE
- CALLICOON - The Delaware Community Center is seeking to hear from all who value the center's presence, and who desire to see it continue.
- In an unusual request, the group's board of trustees made a plea for a broad based grass-roots show of support from members and others who use or appreciate the services offered to the community. Contributions need not be financial, president Peri Ann Hennig said, though cash is certainly needed. Located in Callicoon, the center serves residents on both sides of the river.
- The board feels that letters to the editor of area newspapers, or speaking or writing to town officials to urge additional public support, would be a great help in increasing public awareness of the center's struggle.
- The plea comes at a time when the Sullivan County Youth Commission is considering a substantial cut in the county's contribution to the center. The commission met on Thursday, July 31 and heard from center trustees why the county should not reduce the annual funding from $3800 to $2000.
- Explaining the continuing financial difficulties, treasurer Barry Schuchman received approval to repay a $45000 emergency loan to United National Bank. He noted that the action was essential, "It will leave us tight going into winter." The center will continue to carry a $15,000 deficit "which can not even be considered for repayment at this time," according to Schuchman.
- The board accepted the resignation of Linda Stafford, due to a family matter. Clarence Kratz and Roe Bedford were elected to serve as trustees.
- A benefit auction and rummage sale are planned for the fall, tentatively on Labor Day. To contribute merchandise, call Roe Bedford at 914/887-xxxx. She stated that volunteers will pick up large articles from those who can not transport them.
- In other business, Hennig announced the hiring of Shawn Roche of Callicoon as a new lifeguard for the cneter's pool and Eileen Annunziata through the county's summer employment program.
