    Damascus referendum

    By TOM RUE

DAMASCUS - Damascus Township residents may have the opportunity to vote on whether the township should participate in the planning process relative to the role of the National Park Service (NPS) in the river valley, announced Township Secretary Charles Rutledge at Monday night's meeting of the supervisors.
According to Rutledge, "We plan, on Thursday, to meet with our solicitor to go over the possibility of putting a referendum on the ballot and letting the people speak for themselves."
Whether or not the results of this referendum will be binding on the township is another matter, said Rutledge, but it will definitely give the supervisors a handle on the feeling of the populace.
Township supervisors have already entered into contractual agreements with the NPS for trash collection and law enforcement.
At the suggestion of Jude Canova of Riverfield, the supervisors unanimously agreed that all information gained in an upcoming meeting with township solicitor Jack Spall be included on the agenda for the April 7 meeting of the supervisors.
