Artemis, Diana, daughter of Hera and Zeus, sister of Apollo, Lady of the wild things, hunter, protector of children, Virgin Goddess of the moon and Goddess of chastity and childbirth -- She is associated with the moon. The Moon card of the Tarot symbolizes aspects of the unconscious, fluctuation, change, imagination, dreams, growth of psychic power, and spiritual understanding.
Earth's secondary orb also has historic and symbolic significance among Freemasons.
Drawing down the moon is an ancient phrase which describes a process of calling on the female Divine principle. For discussion of religious practices which some moderns employ, check out Selene's Page. Or see the book by the above title by Margot Adler (1979), grandaughter of the renowned psychiatrist Alfred Adler (Beacon Press, ISBN 0-8070-3253-0).
A closer view of the Lady of night can be had from NASA, whose rockets have visited her and telescopes seek to discover her secrets. Some may wish to view a shot of the moon's current phase, or perhaps a similar picture with a verbose lunar status report giving the time in Seattle.
To grace your Windows toolbar with our Lady's lovely visage in her current manifestation, download a copy of John Walter's Moontool for Windows software, visit his site. (A similar program for DOS has been available on BBSs for years, but this is the first I've seen the Windows version.)
Lunar calendars and related products are available from Snake and Snake Productions.
