Justice declines protesters case
MONTICELLO - The five people charged August 2 with disorderly conduct for carrying protest signs into a Monticello Village Board meeting will know later this week which town or village justice will hear their case.
The five, dubbed the "Monticello Five" by some, appeared yesterday before Sullivan County Criminal Court Judge Anthony T. Kane, who said he will decide later this week about a possible change in venue.
The five people were charged with disorderly conduct, a violation, after they were warned that signs were banned from the building.
Village Manager James J. Malloy said the signs were disruptive to the meetings.
On August 10, Village Justice John Diuguid excused himself from the case as did Deputy Justice Josephine Finn.
Diuguid and other village leaders are the subject of a lawsuit that contests a power switch earlier this year, when Mayor Diuguid, resigned to become village justice.
The five were protesting the power switch. They also were demonstrating against Stericycle, a medical waste processing company that wants to locate in Monticello.
Glenn Pontier, of Narrowsburg; Mary Marino of Monticello; Thomas and Carmen Rue of Monticello, and Charles Stephenson, of North Branch were arrested.
