Hearing scheduled for protesters
MONTICELLO - A hearing has been scheduled about a change in venue in the trial of five people arrested earlier this month and charged with carrying protest signs into a Monticello Village Board meeting.
[Judge Anthony] Kane could hear on Monday what town or village justice court will hear the case that revolves around five people arrested at an Aug. 2 Village Board meeting. All five were charged with disorderly conduct, a violation.
The hearing is scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at the Sullivan County Court House.
On Aug. 10, Village Justice John Diuguid excused himself from the case, as did Deputy Justice Josephine Finn.
Diuguid and other village leaders are the subject of a lawsuit that contests a power switch earlier this year.
In the lawsuit, then Mayor Diuguid, resigned to become village justice. Trustee Robert Friedland then took over Diuguid's position as mayor.
Those arrested were protesting the power switch. They also were protesting Stericycle, a medical waste processing company that wants to locate in Monticello.
Those arrested were Glenn Pontier, of Narrowsburg; Mary Marino, of Monticello; Thomas and Carmen Rue, also of Monticello, and Charles Stephenson, of North Branch.
