Village Board warns against disrupting meeting
MONTICELLO -- The Monticello Village Board will meet tonight at 8.
At a Village Board meeting two weeks ago, five people were charged with disorderly conduct, a violation. Authorities said the five carreid signs into the Village Hall protesting Stericycle, a medical waste processing company that wants to locate a plant in Monticello.
The group also protested a power switch, where Mayor John Diuguid resigned to become village justice and Trustee Robert Friedland became mayor.
Village Majager James J. Malloy said the signs were banned because they were disruptive.
At a court appearance Tuesay, the protesters said they would bring signs to the meeting and encouraged others to bring signs, too.
The group seeks protection under the First Amendment right to freedom of expression.
Village Attorney Mark Schulman said the protesters could be arrested tonight if they come to the meeting with signs.
Schulman said they will be allowed to protest outside the Village Hall.
The case has been handed over to County Judge Anthony T. Kane, who will re-assign it to another town or village court.
