NARROWSBURG -- About 45 people trekked 10 kilometers from Narrowsburg to Milanville yesterday, in the name of humanity and in memory of the walk's founder -- Clyde B. "Bud" Rue, who died at 59 during the first walk in 1993.
All in all, at the end of that walk, organizers had $2,860 in pledge money in hand -- and hope to top last year's total of $3,000.
"It is a very special cause for my four children, as they are carrying on a cause very dear to their father's heart," said Ann Rue, last night. "And it is very special for those who will benefit from the funds raised."
Funds from the walk, sponsored by the Upper Delaware Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, will be split equally between the following organizations: Interfaith Outreach United, based in Callicoon; Sullivan County Habitat for Humanity; Victim's Intervention Program, based in Wayne County; and the Unitarian Universalist United Nations Office.
"My father died during what meant most to him, with people unified or the same cause -- and taking a walk in fall foliage, which he loved," said Rue's son, Tom Rue. "Having people carry on his cause in the Bud Rue Memorial Walk for Social Justice would have meant a lot to him, I know."
