Plenty of food for the holidays

SULLIVAN COUNTY -- No one will go hungry for Thanksgiving or the winter holidays, if staff and volunteers at local service and religious organizations have their way. While the following list is not exhaustive list, local activities include:

  • Callicoon. A free Thanksgiving dinner will be served on November 23, from noon to 3:00 PM, "for people who are alone for the holiday," at Holy Cross Church, said Father Ignatius Smith. For a ride to the dinner, call 914/887-5450. Food donations are accepted every Sunday at church services.

  • Callicoon. Interfaith Outreach United collects and distributes food and other necessities to the needy all year round. Thanksgiving turkey baskets have already been distributed, but are still available by calling Tom Hubers at 914/887-5241.

  • Callicoon and Harris. Community General Hospital's "season of caring" campaign among hospital staff members is having a food drive through December 31; a coat drive November 12 to 18; and an eyeglass drive November 19 to 25. Deposits may be made in the lobby of the Seelig Division in Harris or Grover Hermann hospital lobby in Callicoon. Call 914/794-3300.

  • Liberty. Community Action Commission to Help the Economy (CACHE) distributes food boxes at the holidays and all year round. Call director Peter Quinlan at 914/292-5821. Also, the Liberty branch of First Nationwide Bank is accepting food donations through the holidays.

  • Mamakating. Food may be dropped off at town hall.

  • Milanville. The Upper Delaware Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at Innisfree on River Rd. will host a free pot-luck Thanksgiving dinner on November 23, 1:00 P.M. Call 717/729-7197.

  • Monticello. Food is being collected at Village Hall on Pleasant St., the Neighborhood Facility on Jefferson St., Apollo Plaza on East Broadway, and United Way at 26 Landfield Ave.

  • Narrowsburg. Turkeys and food baskets were distributed this past Sunday at St. Francis Xavier Church as a joint project with Franciscan parishes in Jeffersonville, Callicoon, Yulan and Obernberg, said Father Neil Padden of Narrowsburg.

  • Wurtsboro. The Mamakating Agency, 124 Sullivan St., is collecting food for distribution to the needy.

  • United Way of Sullivan County is coordinating events countywide. For information on areas not listed above, call director Linda Cellini at 914/794-1771.
