Public statement by Robert Friedland
Mayor, Village of Monticello

[Editor's Note: The following was read by Mayor Robert Friedland at a Monticello village board meeting on October 16, 1995. Immediately, the only response was from trustee Gary Sommers who read a prepared statement of his own, saying: "I would like to say that I would to apologize for the manner in which I conducted myself at the last meeting. And I would like to guarantee to my constituents that it will not happen again."]

In spite of the way a certain board member acted at the last [Oct. 2] board meeting towards a representative of the Oneida Nation I want to let the public and this board know that communications between the Oneida National and myself are still open and a dialogue is still taking place. The communication at this point is due to a strong relationship based on trust which has been built since the Oneida proposal first came to be. In addition to communications with the Oneida Nation, I have for the past two weeks been in touch very frequently with Supervisor Cellini regarding the Oneida Nation.

The Oneida representative has assured us they are still looking for property in the Village of Monticello, and the Town of Thompson. They are still very committed to placing a casino in Sullivan County. I as Mayor am committed to casino gaming for this county. I will do everything in my power to see this become a reality.

I want to advise this board that the Oneida Nation has many opportunities open to them in the county where they can place a casino. Communities are welcoming them with open arms. I at this point strongly advise this board and the employees of this village in the future to do everything in their power to encourage economic growth for our community. Please listen when people explain and talk. Whether it be the Oneidas or any other entity that wants to bring growth to our community.

Please from now on be courteous and listen. Don't throw the baby out with the bath water. We as a board and members of this have a responsibility. Instead of criticizing let's get our facts first. In the future when a press conference is called and you are invited and it is widely published in the papers please make every effort to attend. When you are invited to see a facility like you were to see Turningstone and hear first hand what the community has to say about the impact of Turningstone on the community, please go. When I or any board member want to tell you about what is happening please be a little receptive. This board must work together to achieve a positive result for this village and the people who elected us to office.
