New board officers at Community Center

    By TOM RUE
CALLICOON - The Delaware Community Center has elected new officers for its board of directors, filling vacancies created by the resignation of former President Peri Ann Hennig Archer and Cindy Gorr.
Selected were: Tom Rue of Milanville, president; Jane Buddenhagen of Callicoon, vice-president; Joyce Sykes of Callicoon, secretary; and Barry Schuchman of Damascus, treasurer.
The community center operates a free summer youth program for Sullivan or Wayne County youth, funded by the Sullivan County Youth Bureau. Funding for other activities comes from the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, as well as contributions from private sources. At the meeting, it was noted with disappointment that the center had not been chosen to receive a $30,000 grant from the Marcy-South Power Authority, as had been hoped.
Year round activities at Hermann Hall, the swimming pool and athletic fields involve pre-schoolers, senior citizens, and everyone in between.
Maintenance of the grounds and main hall is largely performed by volunteers supervised by resident caretakers Bill and Sue Hennig. A voluntary board of directors manages the organization's business affairs, while Delaware Valley Central School physical education instructor Andy Ranaudo acts as summertime program director.
The center includes an access site on the Delaware River, which is leased to the NYS Department of Conservation (DEC) and maintained by the National Park Service (NPS). Rue said that negotiations are now in progress to obtain "fair market" rent from the DEC.
Other fund-raising plans include approaching town boards and boards of supervisors on both sides of the river, and publishing a booklet containing a history of the center, he said.
Other board members include: Roe Bedford, Holly Keyser, Clarence Kratz, Michele Schuchman, and Pete Sigelakis.
