    Milanville Bridge closed again

SKINNERS FALLS -- The River Reporter was surprised as anyone to learn recently that the bridge across the Delaware at Skinners Falls is closed again.
In early 1986, petitions were collected at the Milanville General Store and numerous letters written, urging the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) to take into account area residents' needs in determining its repair schedule. Even so, the bridge was closed from early June to the end of October.
Last week new detour signs appeared and on Monday the barricades erected and the bridge closed.
PennDOT official Chuck Mattel of the Dunmore office assured us that the remaining sandblasting and painting of the superstructure will be complete in six weeks:
Problems encountered last year by Postupak Painting Co., the painting subcontractor, forced a halt to sandblasting when falling chips of old lead paint polluted the Upper Delaware River. PennDOT ordered Postupak to cease sandblasting until they devised a system to capture the lead particles.
Hopefully the problem is solved and the weather will permit the contractor to complete the painting and reopen the bridge before the summer season begins.
