Schiff and Chaboty sworn in as Sheriff and Undersheriff

MONTICELLO - Above, swearing in as Sullivan County's newest Sheriff is Michael Schiff. The oath was administered by county clerk George Cooke (right) on December 7th in the legislative chambers at the county Government Center. In the same ceremony, Schiff announced that veteran State Trooper Eric Chaboty as his undersheriff.

After Schiff's oath was completed, Chaboty was sworn into office by his wife Tammi, a notary public. A sergeant based at the Liberty state police barracks, Schiff has been the treasurer for the eastern NY division of the the State Trooper's Police Benevolent Association, in charge of a $2 million budget. He will retire from his state positions to work with Schiff at the sheriff's department.

Schiff said he and Chaboty have "fought many battles together" in the past. Both have been active in the trooper's union.

Both men will assume their posts at midnight on January 1, 2006, when outgoing Sheriff Dan Hogue retires.
