Monticello H.S. senior gets Masonic scholarship award

LIBERTY - High school Matthew "Jake" Burns of Monticello received a monetary award and certificate of merit from Monticello Lodge #532, Free & Accepted Masons, on September 24th. Speaking for the lodge, worshipful master Michael LaFountain and lodge secretary John Wells cited Mr. Burns as an exemplar of the traits which the Masonic fraternity promotes in men of all ages.

"In recognition of excellence in academics and character, in keeping with the Masonic values placed on personal discipline, study, and seeking of light in knowledge," the certificate said.

Freemasonry is the oldest and largest fraternal organization in the world. Membership requires a belief in Deity and urges its members to be faithful to their own religious beliefs, but it is not a religion. Masonry brings men together for fellowship and the promotion of integrity and good citizenship.

Mr. Burns was selected by the lodge because of his involvement in athletics, his membership in the Boy Scouts, service in the Civil Air Patrol, and as a volunteer firefighter. In addition, he has volunteered time at the Town of Bethel Youth Board and with the Sullivan County Historical Society.

Setting his sites on Corning Community College in Corning, NY, Mr. Burns plans to major in fire protection technology and paramedics.

"Thank you for helping me go to college and pursue my dream," Mr. Burns said.
