Invitation to help build a better community To the Editor:
The Upper Delaware Unitarian Universalist Fellowship would like to strengthen its ranks as a liberal religious presence in the region. Readers of this newspaper are invited to join with us, Sunday mornings at 11am, at the former Innisfree Youth Hostel on River Road near the Skinners Falls Bridge in Milanville, Pennsylvania. In our varied programs, we attempt to bridge the gap between reason and transcending mystery. Our consulting minister, the Reverend Raymond J. Pontier, shares a sermon on a religious topic once each month. The remainder of Sunday mornings are scheduled with workshops and speakers from the community on a broad range of interesting and moving subjects.
Our local group, which is affiliated with the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations in North America, has drafted and adopted a seven-point Statement of Purpose defining what we as a congregation believe. A copy of this statement is available to anyone who visits our meetings. Another statement which perhaps captures the essence of these principles is:
We believe in knowledge, for there is no help in ignorance;
We believe in reason, for without it a person surrenders to the blind forces of falsehood and prejudice;
We believe in compassion, for revenge and hatred destroy the spirit;
We believe in love, for it is life's most creative power;
People of good will from any faith - Jewish, Christian, Pagan, Buddhist, agnostic and others - are invited to join with us. Among our members are artists and activists involved a variety of local groups dedicated to solving humanity's most intractable problems through organized community action. The fellowships sponsorship of a new parent-run Montessori school, known as The River School, demonstrates our organizational commitment to education and self-help. We also operate a small, informal food pantry for needy families.
Regardless of past experience with Unitarian Universalistm, interested readers are invited to attend a meeting to join us in our quest to give added meaning to our own lives through beuilding a better community.
Respectfully,
UPPER DELAWARE UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST FELLOWSHIP
Thomas S. Rue
President
