Benton was credited as that project's historian. A footnote states: "This record was written by John P. Jones in his later years and may contain inaccuracies in dates. (Copied by Mrs. Luis deHoyos.)" A copy of the journal is available in the Crawford Public Library's local history room.



Monticello, Sullivan County, N.Y., April 15, A.D. 1850:
"The Family Record of John P. Jones, who with his brother Samuel F. Jones, founded and named, the Village of Monticello, in the then wilderness: the first tree was cut by J.P. Jones and his present dwelling erected in the month of September in the year of our Lord 1804." -- written in John P. Jones' own hand in his family Bible.

First Generation.
Col. Jones was born in 1579 in the Isle of Anglesey, of which he became Governor; was one of the Judges of Charles I of England. Married Henrietta, sister of Siri Oliver Cromwell in the year A.D. 1623. Died Oct. 17, A.D. 1660 in his 81st year. Had last been Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. His children were: William, John and Morgan.

Second Generation.
William Jones was born in London A.D. 1614; educated a lawyer; married his first wife in 1650; they had four sons, Caleb, Jacob, William and Nathaniel. Emigrated with his family to New Haven, Conn. in 1660. Elected Lieut. Governor May 25, 1664. Married his second wife, daughter of Gov. Eaton, July 1659. Had one son Isaac, by his second wife. Died Jan. 1, A.D. 1801 at New Haven, Conn. age 82 -- was for 36 year [sic] a Magistrate or Deputy of New Haven, Conn.

Third Generation.
Nathaniel Jones the 4th -- was born in London, A.D. 1658, son of Hon William Jones; married Abigale Atwater, Oct. 7, 1684. Children: Hannah, Theophilus, and Abigail. Came to New Haven with his father and after his marriage, settled at Wallingford. Died at Wallingford, August 21, 1691.

Fourth Generation.
Theophilus Jones -- born in Wallingford, Conn., March 18, 1690. Married Miss Mix. Died at Wallingford, Conn., 1780 age 90 years. Children: Caleb, Theophilus, etc.

Fifth Generation.
Caleb Jones -- was born at Wallingford, Conn., Nov. 3, 1712. Married Mary Frisby Howe, widow of Captain Howe, at Wallingford. Died at Wallingford, A.D. 1815, age 91 years. Children: Ann, Zachariah, Hannah, Caleb, Samuel and John.

Sixth Generation.
Samuel Jones, Esq. -- born Wallingford, Conn., May 15, A.D. 1752. Married Parthenia Patterson, May 10, 1774. Removed to Northern Lebanon 1780. Children: Samuel Frisbie (born Cornwall, Conn., 1775), Phoebe Wells, Parthenia Patterson and John Patterson Jones.

Seventh Generation.
John P. Jones -- born in Goshen, Conn., Jan 16, 1779. Married Aurelia Wells, Mar. 26, 1804. Second wife, Phoebe Ecker. Third wife Charlotte Elizabeth Andrews. Children by 2nd wife are William Samuel, Parthenia, Henrietta, Phoebe Mary. Died at Monticello, Nov. 20, 1858.

Eighth Generation.
Grandchildren of J.P. Jones: Phoebe Jones -- born at Monticello, Sept. 14, 1827; John P. Jones -- died Monticello Mar. 31, 1833; Sarah F. Jones, died at Monticello Oct 27, 1838; Edward Pelton, died at Monticello, Oct. 6, 1825; Mary Frances Pelton, William C. Pelton, John W. Pelton and Henry V. Pelton. Children of Phoebe Mary; Ellen Phoebe Bennet, George Elliot Bennett.
