Dr. John Flood, was mayor of New Hope
NEW HOPE - Dr. John A. Flood, 93, of 28 S. Main St., a dentist and former mayor of New Hope, died Thursday at his home.
Flood, who served four terms as mayor, was also a former two-term chairman of the Bucks County Democratic Committee and a founding member of the New Hope Historical Society.
Dr. Flood was in dental practice in Trenton from 1919 to 1930 before moving to New Hope, where he continued to practice until his retirement in July 1976, after 61 years of service.
From 1915 to 1917, he was a dentist at the Trenton Psychiatric Hospital. He was also a first lieutenant in the dental corps of the U.S. Army from 1917 to 1919 during World War I.
Flood was raised in Lambertville and attended St. John's Elementary School and Lambertville High School. He also attended Emerson Institute of Washington, D.C. and the Georgetown University Dental School.
He graduated from George Washington University Dental School, Class of 1915.
He was a member of St. Martin's Roman Catholic Church of New Hope, Msgr. Crean Branch of the Ancient Order of Hibernians of Trenton, the Jubilee Council, Kinghts of Columbus of Flemington and the Mount Carmel Guild of Trenton.
Flood was a life member of the American Dental Association, New Jersey Dental Association and the Mercer Dental Society.
He was also a charter member of the Edgar H. Denson Post 79, American Legion of New Hope.
His first wife was the former Rose C. Schermerhorn, who died in 1947. Surviving are his wife, Eleanor Ingoldsby Flood, a former teacher at Trenton High School; three sons, Dr. John A. Flood Jr. of Hamilton Square, Dr. James F. Flood of Yardley and Dr. Edward F. Flood of Levittown; a daughter, Mrs. Rosemarie Kulp of New Hope; 23 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Martin's Roman Catholic Church of New Hope. The celebrant will be the Rev. Jervase Ingoldsby, brother of Mrs. Flood. Con-celebrant will be the Rev. Paul Carey, pastor of St. Martin's Church.
Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call Friday after 5 p.m. at Dr. Flood's residence, 28 S. Main St., New Hope.
