Extracts from Ardee parish registers

On Sept. 21st, 1825, Bernard McGuire married Anne Halpenny of Curraghbeg, witnesses being Thomas McGuire and John Halpenny. Possibly Bernard is a mistake for Patrick.

Balapousta burial register

1877 January 9 - Patk. Maguire, aged 80, father of John Maguire, ploughman, Kilp.

1883 May 6 - Richard Halpenny, aged 80, uncle of John Maguire, ploughman, Kilpatrick.

1888 September 27 - Catherine Maguire, aged 52, sister to John, labourer, Kilpatrick.

The ages given in this register are only approximate, and Richard here may be the Richard Halpenny, son of Patrick Halpenny and Jean McCullough of Hunterstown, who was baptized on March the 26th, 1810. This is the only Richard Halpenny in the baptismal register. His parents were married on November the 26th, 1794, at Ardee, witnesses being William Halpenny and Richard McCullough. There is a note of dispensation from the impediment of consanguity between the parties. [Related by blood.]

The McCullough family are commemorated by several fine headstones in an old graveyard of Stickillin, near Ardee, which were erected towards the end of the 18th century.

Hunterstown is a townland adjoining Blakestown, between Ardee and Balapousta.

[PAGE TWO]

For Doctor John A. Flood, box 72, New Hope, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.

In the register of baptisms of the parish of Ardee, county Louth, I find the following items, which seem to refer to your great-grandparents:

1826. June 3. Cather Patrick, son of Patrick Mauire and Anne Halpenny residing at Blakestown. Godparents, Bernard McCormick and Anne Halpenny.[Phila.]

1829. Aug. 28. Michael, son of same, residing at White Mountains. Godparent: Bridget Callaghan. [Gr. Grandfather.]

1832. May 4. Catherine, daughter of same, residing at Blakestown. Godparent, Catherine Halpenny.

The above husband of Anne Halpenny may be the Patrick, son of Thomas and Margaret Maguire of Ardee, who was baptised on October the 28th, 1793, godparents, Patrick Harlin and Catherine Gartlany.

In the register of marriages there is the following entry:

1825. Sept. 21. Bernard McGuire and Anne Halpenny. Witnesses: Thos. McGuire and John Halpenny. The marriage took place at Curraghbeg. The Bernard may very likely be a mistake for Patrick.

In the burial register at Balapousta are these items:

Patrick Maguire, aged 80, buried January the 9th, 1877, described as father of John Maguire, ploughman, Kilpatrick.

Richard Halpenny, 80, buried May the 6th, 1883, uncle of said John Maguire. [Anne's brother.]

Catherine Maguire, 52, buried September the 27th, 1888, sister of said John Maguire.

The ages in this register are very often only approximate.
