This site contains the some of the results of several years of archive-based research commencing in 1973 (done the old-fashioned way, using manuscripts, microforms, and books) combined with information gathered more recently using the power of the Internet. Every effort has been made to document sources, both for purposes of crediting other researchers and to allow the reader to cautiously assess the reliability of any particular fact at issue.
